Default access NAS Files with Apple TV

    Hi guys,

I've bought an Apple TV and already hacked it with a Patchstick hack, installed XBMC, BOXEE an nitoTV. Everythings okay so far, but.....

my whole date (music, video, photos) is on a NAS (Synology) - this is about 800GB of data. I bought the Apple TV because of the remote control posibility with iPhone and iPod touch.

Is there any way, to mount the NAS shares in that way, that I can use it with the original Apple TV GUI - maybe under "My Music" without syncing or copying the whole data to the Apple TV.

I want to access an control my music without switching on the TV - only controlling the device from the iPhone or iPod.

Is anyone here, who can tell me, how I can do this?

    Thanks!!!

    patwi

I have not seen any solution for this.. You either use the built in apple sync/stream system (with it's limitations) or you use some other media manager (e.g.) nito, sapphire, xbmc, boxee

About the only thing I can think of is if you have another mac running iTunes with the library located on the NAS, then the appleTV can stream the contents of the iTunes library without requiring it to be synced.

I personally sync only my music to the ATV but don't manage or sync any video with the ATV. Only have approx 170GB music so that is approx 20% of the data you were talking about.

Yeah but then I have to leave my computer running all the time, with the external drive that holds all my music connected.

Much nicer to have it all accessible directly on the atv.

Different solutions for different people I guess.

understood, it wasnt a great solution, just the only one i could think of I personally stopped using the built in syncing and apples frappliances (outside of settings, photos and internet/youtube) all the way back at 1.0, when youtube didnt even exist (as a frappliance). I cant stand syncing through itunes, it is dreadfully slow, and the fact that everything needs to reside in two locations at all times, OR that the computer needs to be on AND have itunes open (for streaming) is unforgivably crappy.

The way apple told me was that everything on your NAS had to be in yoru iTunes library on a computer. As long as you have an iTunes library pointing to your NAS files, you should be ok. I dont know the ins and outs yet, because I just ordered mine, but I talked with an apple tech about it.
