10.4.11 on hacked ATV, odd colour and resolution
Hi
I have just jail broken my ATV,
the problems i am having are
-Through HDMI, after about 5 seconds of it turning on, it goes to like a purple and green type colour - however fine through component (i have tried numerous cables ,sockets and high def TVs)
the only resolution on hdmi is limited to 720p (i have a 1080p tv)
and component is limited to 480p,
both will only show overscan - can not remove this option
system profiler won't load, just opens then closes again.
i have done everything as per the demo video.
but unlike the video where it comes up with a black and white text type screen, it loads just like a normal mac on 10.4. - it shows the apple logo, then the load screen and logs straight in.
Im not a technically minded in the respect of terminology, i can follow instructions and to electrical and mechanical things.
I had to expand on most of the instructions for the setup, like finding the mach_kernel on the root folder!, i had to work out what "root" folder mean't and then after i tried to drag and drop the new kernel, it told me the other file was hidden, so i then had to find how to un-hide it, and then hide certain files again.
any help would be apreciated.

Also what is bless, i assume i worked it correctly, it said "type bless and press enter" which i did, and it just comes up with some commands to do, none match the things shown.
also the ethernet port doesn't work.

See this for an explanation of what bless is.

im sorry, that just confuses me even more,
could some one tell me a dense version of this page
Mac OS X running on Apple TV
a lot of you are inteligent enough to see half of this and understand it at drop of a hat- unfortunately while i can follow instructions, i find this article is aiming at someone who spends most their life hacking, and working with half this stuff, but if it was written in dopey language, i would understand it very well

Then if that is the case, look for one of the pre-built 10.5.x ASR images that are mentioned on this forum. I cannot give you direct links because these are technically warez and we don't encourage illegal activities.
Making OS X work on an unsupported platform (like the Apple TV which never shipped with a full OS X Install) requires a decent amount of technical aptitude. If you don't have it, then I'd suggest you either devote some time to building your skills up or take the easy route (a pre-made image)
10.5.x reportedly works better than 10.4.x on the atv. (I don't mean it is faster, but the driver support is better)
The "bless" concept has been around in Mac OS X since the very beginning (OS 1.x) - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_Folder (under Location and "blessed" folders) - with the move towards a command line based administration layer an actual command line tool bless was introduced. This allows you to specify and control the specific boot files that should be used to start up from.

Thank you for the explaination.
- Where I am struggling with is, what is the advantage to have OS X on my ATV1.
- When I have OS X installed on my ATV1, can I still use the original (+hacked) ATV1 functionality (perhaps on the OS X) ? If not, why should I do this ? Just to have another MAC PC ?
- As I am not a MAC user, I have no idea, if there is a ATV1 functionality on an OS X PC . Is there ?
- Can I put OS X onto the internal drive and ATV1 onto the external drive and switch between both. Or at least have a choice where to boot.
thank you for clarification

You may be in over your head.
The previous post was correct. Go with the 10.5 images. There is more support. Please see the comments to your questions below.

The advantage of running OS X is limited. It's a basic Mac. VERY BASIC.

Only if you use the 10.5 images and that will be through Front Row. The playback performance is really poor (not usable). Also you will need to buy a 3rd party USB sound card as audio is still not working, and will not be through HDMI any time soon.

To have a cheap mac computer for the kitchen, spare bedroom, or as an itunes/bittorrent server).

??? I don't understand your question.

Yes but that is even more complicated and will probably further confuse you.
In closing:
The ATV 1G is a depreciated product from Apple and is very limited in it playback support out of the box. Hacking will allow for playback and extension of the base function. This is my opinion, but installing OS X is more a hobby experiment then a practical implementation. If you want an HTPC you need to buy better hardware.
If you are still interested read on in the forum threads. All the information I expressed it there as well.
