Ok, on my 5th install now and starting to get a little despondent.

Here's what I have in my test box:

P4 3.4GHz
Abit AS8
nVidia 6600gt
1GB RAM
120GB IDE HD

Tried it with the following:
voodoo, nvidia 128, icXX, alc880

But all I get is a disk failure message and a sad feeling
