Downgrade wont help, the error you see is due to the baseband not beeing downgraded. There is no way downgrading the 3G's baseband as of now.
Should have checked the forum first...
You are stuck now with firmware 2.2.1, no unlock, no way back.
The only thing you could do is use Quickpwn and make the iPhone act as an iPod - and wait for a solution.
